Hoot hoot!

So, I have this cute stamp set (a retired hostess set) that I had yet to use.  The stamps are adorable, but I just couldn't come up with a card creation that would highlight them and add to the design.  Yesterday I got a bunch of punches I ordered, leading me to a break-through idea: Owl Punch Art.  Stampin' Up does have an owl punch now, but I don't, so this was the next best thing.  Here's the result:

  Dilemma solved?  I think so!
Stampin' Up Supplies
Paper: More Mustard,Chocolate Chip, Early Espresso, Soft Suede, Whisper White  Cardstock, Sweet Pea Designer Series Paper
Stamp: Picture This (Retired)
Tools/Embellishments: SNAIL Adhesive, Stampin' Pastels, Blender Pen, Brads - Subtles Collection, Paper Piercing Tool, 1 3/4 Inch Scallop Circle Punch, Boho Blossoms Punch, Curly Label Punch, Scallop Oval Punch

Technique Time: Poppin' Pastels

This technique uses  Stampin' Pastels with Versamark Pad.  Alternatively, you can also use a white or vanilla Stampin' Pad.  Stampin' Pastels was the first Stampin' Up product I bought, and is still one of my favourites!  It gives you access to every colour and isn't nearly as expensive as buying inks in every single colour.  The basic technique for using the pastels involves stamping your outline with Basic Black and colouring in the image with the colours of your choice, which I demonstrated in a previous post.  The Poppin' Pastels technique eliminates the black outline and gives a completely different look!  Here's how to do it:

1) Stamp the image with a White or Vanilla Craft Stampin' Pad. You may also use a VersaMark ink pad.
2) Use sponge daubers or stamping sponges to apply the pastel colour directly to the ink.
3) Blow off any excess pastel powder. (Repeat process if using this technique with a Two-Step Stampin' set).

If you wish to prevent smearing, the image can be "set" with an inexpensive hairspray, sprayed 12 inches from the card.  This isn't recommended for scrapbooking pages, however, as the ph content of the hairspray may be unsafe for photos.

I made a couple of cards using this technique, both which have a completely different look!
This image was stamped on the smooth Whisper White cardstock.  This resulted in a bolder image, and it almost looks like it was coloured with crayons!

This is probably my favourite of the two.  Using the Versamark Ink and the pastels on the textured paper gives the image a watercoloured look.

Let me know which one is your favourite, and remember you can shop online 24/7 @ Stampin' Up

Why (and how!) to get started Stampin'

As I previously mentioned, I suffer from both mental and physical health issues.  I find stamping and card making to be very therapeutic and I really believe that anyone can get into it.  Luckily for me, you don't have to be artistic at all - the image is already there!  On the other hand, there are no bounds on your creativity!  I find stamping to be a very good stress reliever.  Detailed and complex projects are great for getting your mind off small stresses, where simpler, production style cards work great for larger stresses, when your intellect is usually fried!

There are a few things about card making that make it a beneficial activity for someone suffering from depression.  Making a single card is not a very time-consuming activity and provides instant gratification.  Maybe you don't accomplish anything that day except for making a card.  You can still say to yourself, "I accomplished something today".  Depression is also notorious for causing someone to fall out of touch with the world.  Maintaining human contact is so important in healing.  You may not feel like seeing your friends or family, or picking up the phone to call them.  Send a handmade card instead - it's more personal than an e-mail and keeps you on your track towards recovery.

As someone dealing with anxiety, I understand how helpful card-making can be for me.  Firstly, the fact that it engages my mind is incredible for stress relief.  I find it's somewhere in between a mindless activity that doesn't attract enough of my attention, and a challenging task, that would cause me to give up.  I also get that sense of accomplishment and don't have to wait long to receive it!  Activities that give us instant pleasure are really beneficial in good mental health.  It's something we practice as a child but often forget to - or can't find the time to - in adulthood.  Making cards allows us to retreat back to that place of creativity, while creating something that is useful in life as an adult :).  Not only is making your own cards enjoyable, it's also less expensive and more personal than buying a card from the drug store.  And, who knows, you may even start selling your cards!

Stamping is an activity that can be a bit daunting to get into.  I`m offering a beginner`s stamping kit that has what you need to get started for $112.95 (+shipping and taxes) and make more than 80 cards!

The Beginner`s Stamping Kit Contains:
